Among your eco tour options in Jaco Beach, are the Carara Biological Reserve, the Manuel Antonio National Park and Wildlife Reserve, the Tarcoles River, Playa Hermosa, and the Arenal Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is probably the most famous, as it is the only active volcano in Costa Rica. It has been active since its explosion in 1968, and has produced large clouds of ash and red hot flows of lava almost daily since the initial explosion. Experienced locals can guide you to the safe look out points, as close to the maw of the great volcano as you can get. Another big attraction for eco tourists is the Manuel Antonio National Park, which is an important conservation location for the endangered Squirrel Monkey, which has a large population here. Locally guided eco tours are available here, as well.
Another beautiful eco tour option is the Carara Biological reserve, an extremely important nesting ground for the endangered and stunningly beautiful scarlet Macaw. Thesebeautiful birdsmigrate daily between their nesting and feeding grounds, so hike this hour long trail at sunrise or sunset when the birds are most active. About six miles down the coast from Jaco Beach is Playa Hermosa, a secluded nesting ground for the magnificent sea turtles. During nesting season, visitors can witness these stately creatures as they come ashore to lay their eggs.
There is also a guided eco tour by boat, up the nearby Tarcoles River. This tour takes you through the Guacalillo mangrove Eco System, which is comprised of four distinct types of mangroves. The animal life that makes its home here includes hundreds of species of birds, amphibians and reptiles, including the amazing river crocodiles, which can reach up to fifteen feet long in this area of Costa Rica.
